Senior consultant, SHL, Canberra
2001 - graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Psychology (Honours) from the University of Canberra.
“I chose UC because it seemed more like a small community than some of the other universities that I checked out. My preference was to attend a tertiary institution where I felt comfortable, particularly coming from a coastal town. I was also drawn to the degree title – ‘Applied Psychology’ as it seemed to have a practical emphasis.
I enjoyed a supportive learning environment that helped in developing my research, presentation and writing skills, especially in the discipline of psychology. The undergraduate course covered a broad range of subjects in psychology, which has encouraged me to take advantage of a broad range of work opportunities.
I also completed gender studies as my major and I think having a diversity of perspectives on how to approach an issue has been useful.”
I always wanted to be continually challenged, involved in ongoing learning and working with people.
My best memories of UC are the friendships, the theoretical discussions and being encouraged to think differently.
My first job out of uni was as an intern psychologist with a private clinic in Canberra.
My career highlight was designing, delivering and evaluating a leadership development program with a team of managers in New Zealand. Applying psychometric tools to provide insight and uncover team dynamics was particularly interesting.
Today I am working as a senior consultant with the international objective assessment company, SHL. This involves design and application of psychological assessment methodologies to maximise people’s performance in the work environment.
In the future I want to be continuing to enjoy the application of psychological knowledge and skills in roles that provide ongoing learning and challenging experiences.
