Her Story in Four Centuries
By Sylvia Webber

 her-story

Her story in four centuries is a book of four true stories about women, set in the period of the British Empire. This honest and heartwarming book testifies to the strength of mind of women forced to cope with wars and illness while at the same time protecting and educating their children. The book shows how family members worked together. The writing is brought to life with maps and illustrations.

Spanning more than three hundred years, the book tells the stories of Margaret Rudston caught up in the Civil War in England; Maria Barstow enduring the Napoleonic wars and the sieges of Danzig; and the four daughters of the Reverend Thomas Kelly living in Ireland in the nineteenth century with the threat of tuberculosis and famine. In the final story the author, Sylvia Webber, tells her own tale of growing up in Malaya and Australia and how she was affected by war, separation, and boarding school.

The Change Makers
Stories from Australia's first environmental studies graduates
John A. Harris

What makes for a good environmental citizen? Is she or he born or made?

Each new generation not only lives a different life from their predecessors, but sees dramatic changes as they live their own lives. What gives one person a sense of purpose and direction as the live through the changes, while others simply get lost? At a time when there is a desperate need to ensure that the global environment remains fit for people to live in, what makes some young people respond to that call, while others do not event hear it?

John Harris was a pioneer in teaching environmental studies in Australia and in tracking down and interviewing his former students from the 1970s, 80s and 90s he has produced a deeply moving book full of profound insights. Harris explores the post university lives of the environmental graduates and tells an inspiring story of trailblazers who have made a difference. The book brilliantly charts the joys and challenges these individuals experienced as they created a wide range of new jobs. Anyone concerned about environment issues needs to read this book to learn from the wisdom of Australia’s first generation of environmental professionals.
