UC Assistant Professor receives Women with Heart Award

Tara Corcoran

28 June 2018: University of Canberra Clinical Assistant Professor in Physiotherapy Dr Nicole Freene has been awarded a Women with Heart Award in recognition of her efforts to support the fight against heart disease.

Dr Freene and 11 other local women were acknowledged this week by Heart Foundation ACT for their long-standing contributions to the foundation’s ACT branch.

Dr Freene was instrumental in establishing a program aimed at helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women access a cardiovascular rehabilitation program.

Based at the University the Canberra, the Yeddung Gauar Cardiac Rehabilitation Group runs fitness and education sessions for women recovering from or at risk of cardiovascular disease.

“It’s a privilege to be recognised along with 11 outstanding women who all share a passion for helping people overcome heart disease,” Dr Freene said.

“Heart disease is a leading killer of Australian women so it’s vital that we have committed people in Canberra to support heart disease research.”

Congratulations to Dr Freene and her fellow 2018 Women with Heart recipients.
