Sydneysider receives UC degree

Vanessa Lam

28 September 2016: For Sydney’s Christina Maresca, graduating from the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Graphic Design and a Chancellor’s Commendation award, was an exciting achievement.

“I learnt so much and gained so much confidence in my abilities as a designer, so I was ready to start working full-time,” Ms Maresca said.

Ms Maresca added that she was honoured to receive the Chancellor’s Commendation, which is awarded to the student who achieves the highest grade point average for their entire undergraduate degree in each faculty.

“I worked so hard, and dedicated myself completely to my studies over the course of the degree so it was really great for that effort to be acknowledged in such a prestigious way,” she said.

The 22-year-old graduated with a University of Canberra degree alongside five other graphic design students on 21 September, after studying through the Northern Sydney Institute (NSI).

NSI is one of two TAFE NSW locations the University has partnered with, to offer University of Canberra degrees in Sydney.

“I decided to enrol in a diploma of graphic design at the Northern Sydney Institute’s St Leonard’s Campus to see how I would like it and I ended up loving it so much I went on to study the Bachelor of Graphic Design through UC,” Ms Maresca said.

“It was great that the degree was available at NSI as I was considering studying at other universities in Sydney but the learning style offered at NSI suited me better.”

Ms Maresca said what she enjoyed most about the degree was the practical experience she gained getting to work for real clients.

“I found the emphasis on graphic design in a professional setting to be most valuable and loved having the opportunity to produce work for real life clients,” she said.

Ms Maresca is currently working as a junior digital designer at Savv-e, an e-learning agency in Northern Sydney.
