Staff excellence recognised at VC’s awards

20 January 2015: University of Canberra staff have been acknowledged for their outstanding achievement in areas including teaching, student learning and research at the annual Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Awards.

At the event held on 24 October 2014, Vice-Chancellor Stephen Parker shared some of the University's outstanding achievements for the year, including the installation of Dr Tom Calma AO as Chancellor – the first Indigenous man to fill this role in an Australian university- and the University remaining world ranked for the second consecutive year, placing it among the top five per cent of universities in the world.

"I would like to acknowledge the contribution of everyone who works at UC, but the people we recognise today have distinguished themselves through their excellent contribution, many over a long period of time, and I need to emphasise that there is an element of sustained excellence in applying the criteria for these awards," Professor Parker said.

Misty Adoniou said she was "excited and honoured" to receive the Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Award for Teaching Excellence.

Ms Adoniou lectures in language, literacy and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESL) and is the lead writer for the national English as an Additional Language Teachers Resource, which accompanies the Australian Curriculum. She also serves on several national advisory boards.

"I've really appreciated the freedom I have been given to pursue innovative practices in teacher education and to develop partnerships with employers and external agencies, as well as other universities. My sole aim is to put the best teachers we can in front of our children in schools – and these partnerships are an important part of achieving that aim," Ms Adoniou said.
