UC Capitals make World Uni Games team

30 May 2017: Three University of Canberra Capitals players have been named in the 2017 Australian Women’s World University Games team.

Keely Froling, Abbey Wehrung and new recruit Lauren Scherf were announced in the emerging Opals side which will contest the 29th Summer Universiade (also known as the World University Games) in Taipei in August.

The World University Games provides athletes – both aspiring and professional – with the opportunity to compete against their fellow university students.

To be eligible, participants must be studying at university and be under the age of 23.

Froling is studying a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at the University of Canberra and Wehrung is studying a Bachelor of Applied Business (Management).

Scherf, who signed a two-year deal with the UC Capitals earlier this month, is studying sports science and physical education at the University of Melbourne.

University of Canberra Capitals Chief Executive Officer Joe Roff congratulated the trio on being selected.

“Balancing sporting commitments alongside university study is no easy feat,” Mr Roff said.

“I congratulate Keely, Abbey and Lauren on their selection in the emerging Opals side and we wish them every success in Taipei.”

Australia has been drawn against reigning bronze medallists Russia, Lithuania and Argentina in Group D.

The side will be looking to improve on 2015’s fifth place finish. Australia begins its campaign against Lithuania on 21 August.
