Labor promises new clinical school for UC campus

15 September 2016: The ACT Labor party has promised to build a new nursing and allied health clinical school at the University of Canberra.

Labor announced this week it would provide $2.3 million in funding for the new facility, if re-elected at the October election.

The school would include training and research facilities, as well as teaching facilities at the new University of Canberra Public Hospital (UCPH) and Canberra Hospital. Students would also have access to state-of-the-art clinical simulation equipment for an enhanced learning experience.

The commitment comes just days after Labor pledged to establish a new nurse practitioner course at the University and fund more nurse scholarships.

The rapidly developing UCPH is part of the University's campus development project. It has been designed as a sub-acute care facility – the first of its kind in the ACT – and will provide Canberrans with improved access to rehabilitation, aged care and mental health services.

The UCPH is scheduled to open in 2018.
