Harveen Kaur will spend a week writing stories on the summit's proceedings as a journalist in the press team.

Ms Kaur said she was surprised to land the opportunity after competing with university students from around the world.

"I knew that so many people were applying to participate in this event, I didn't think I would get it," she said.

"I was also quite nervous. I don't know much about Montenegro so I knew I would have to do some research."

The 2014 Model NATO Youth Summit is one of the largest decision-making simulations around the world.

European students can represent their individual nations as delegates and chairpersons, while journalist roles are open to students from around the world.

The Summit proposes real-life NATO situations to students and asks them to defend important positions such as national interests, peace, security and trade.

Ms Kaur said it was the perfect place to practise all aspects of her degree with likeminded students.

"It will enable me to gain professional experience outside the classroom and to implement the skills and knowledge I have learnt," she said.

"I'll also benefit from covering an international event and developing a greater understanding about NATO, its processes and diplomacy procedures."

The Model NATO Youth Summit (MoNYS) runs from 1 - 7 December in Podgorica, Montenegro.
