Canberra CEO awarded honorary degree

14 April 2014: Canberra Business Council CEO Chris Faulks says she was “surprised and honoured” to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Canberra.
This isn’t the first time Dr Faulks has graduated from the University, as she also has a Graduate Diploma in Education.
“As someone who graduated from the University of Canberra in 1976 (then the Canberra College of Advanced Education) I have watched the University develop and grow in both reputation and stature. I feel enormously proud that my work has been recognised by my alma mater,” Dr Faulks says.
“This honorary doctorate validates the important connection between academia and business and those vital relationships within our community.”
Dr Faulks commenced as CEO of the Canberra Business Council in September 2007, an organisation which represents the interests of a large number of businesses across the ACT and the capital region.
Previously, she had been general manager of public affairs and government relations at Diabetes Australia and before that she spent 13 years working as a senior adviser to Federal Government ministers across a range of portfolios.

She has also been involved in a wide range of community organisations for the past 38 years, including becoming a member of the University of Canberra Council this year. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University and a Graduate Diploma in Administration from the College of Management.
In delivering the occasional address at her graduation ceremony, Dr Faulks shared some advice to the University’s graduates on how to succeed in their future careers.
“One of the most important lessons I have learned is to grasp opportunities as they arise, because they often lead you into amazing careers and life experiences that you had never considered.”
