University of Canberra Chancellor, Professor Tom Calma AO, has announced the appointment of Professor of Engineering in the Faculty of Science and Technology, Professor Elisa Martinez-Marroquin, to Chair of the Academic Board for a three-year term commencing January 1, 2020.
Professor Martinez-Marroquin has held academic positions for over 20 years in Europe, Singapore, and Australia, ranging from Director of Technology Transfer, Senior Research Fellow and Head of Discipline to Acting Executive Dean and more.
Professor Martinez-Marroquin’s research background is in Artificial Intelligence, with applications ranging from robotic vision to biometrics, and more recently learning analytics.
She has published in high impact international journals and conferences, is the author of nine book chapters, and one commercialised patent.
Professor Martinez-Marroquin has thanked the University Council for placing their trust and confidence in her for the role.
“I feel honoured and privileged to serve the University and its vibrant academic community,” said Professor Martinez-Marroquin.
“I look forward to working with Council, the Senior Executive and the academics to continue the University of Canberra’s strong commitment to the highest standards in teaching, research and scholarship.
“I assume the role in the midst of a very exciting time for UC with development of new courses, dramatic improvement of research excellence indicators and unparalleled progress in international rankings.”
Professor Calma said he is looking forward to working with Professor Martinez-Marroquin.
“As the Chair of the Academic Board, Professor Martinez-Marroquin will also sit on the University Council, so I look forward to working with her in both capacities over the next three years,” Professor Calma said.
“I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Professor Dharmendra Sharma for his leadership and contribution to the University of Canberra as Chair of the Academic Board for the past six years.”
