The ACT has led the nation in the fight for marriage equality, introducing the (now repealed) Marriage Equality Same Sex Act in 2013, and registering the highest percentage of ‘yes’ votes in the 2017 postal survey (74 per cent) of any state or territory.
The Office for LGBTIQ+ Affairs sits under the ACT Chief Minister’s portfolio and it can be argued that the ACT is the most progressive state or territory in Australia for gay and lesbian rights. But what about the often-unheard stories from the other colours of the rainbow—bisexual, transgender, gender diverse, intersex and queer communities?
Join host, writer and TV personality Benjamin Law (The Family Law, Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East, Moral Panic 101, Growing Up Queer in Australia) with a panel of University of Canberra experts, advocates and people from all the colours of the rainbow to discuss their experiences, research and the support or issues the community faces in today’s Canberra.
The panel includes: UC PhD candidate Robin Ladwig whose research encompasses career development and work pathways of gender-diverse individuals and the interrelation to workplace culture and organisational structures; Head of the Canberra Business School in the Faculty of Business, Government and Law and mother of five Professor Raechel Johns, whose research focuses on Transformative Services to support communities—including the LGBTIQ+ community—for enhanced wellbeing; and, Rainbow UC President, Jace Reh, an award-winning community advocate for LGBTQI+ young people and trans issues. The panel will be joined by very special guest, ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr MLA.
