Elections

In accordance with the University of Canberra Act 1989 (ACT) four positions on Council are filled by election as follows:

  • one member of the academic staff elected by members of the academic staff;
  • one member of the profession staff elected by members of the professional staff;
  • one undergraduate student elected by undergraduate students of the University; and
  • one postgraduate student elected by postgraduate students of the University.

There are also a number of elected positions on Academic Board as set out in the Academic Board Rules including:

  • up to four Professors, who are not members of the Board under another paragraph of the Rules, elected by the professorial members of the academic staff;
  • one member of the academic staff of each academic faculty elected by the academic staff members of that faculty;
  • one member of the professional staff elected by members of the professional staff to be the member of Council;
  • one member of the academic staff elected by members of the academic staff to be a member of the Council; and
  • one undergraduate and one postgraduate student elected from among their number by the students of the University.

Elections for Council members are governed by the University of Canberra (Election of Staff Members of Council) Rules 2015 and the University of Canberra (Election of Student Members of Council) Rules 2015.

Elections for Academic Board members are governed by the University of Canberra (Election of Professorial Members of Academic Board) Rules 2015, the University of Canberra (Election of Academic Staff Members of Academic Board) Rules 2015 and the University of Canberra (Election of Student Members of Academic Board) Rules 2015.

Elections are also run for representative positions on the Outside Studies Program Committee and UniSuper as required.

Terms of Office

Student members of Council and Academic Board are elected for one year terms. Staff members of Council and Academic Board are elected for two year terms.

Terms begin on 1 January.

Nominations are normally called for in October and close in early November. This permits time for a contested election if required and the induction of new members prior to the beginning of their term.
