John is a researcher in international development in the Australian Institute for Sustainable Communities. He was previously Foundation Professor of Agribusiness at Charles Sturt University and before that Professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He applies methods of participatory action research (PAR) with the aim of bringing about positive change in agriculturally-based communities in developing countries. He has worked on projects/given workshops in a number of developing countries including Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Vietnam and Zambia. Over time, he has built a research program which knits together his interests in organic research, collaborative development, agricultural development economics, agricultural marketing and agricultural value chain management. He is currently co-leading (with Barbara Chambers) an ACIAR-funded project in Pakistan entitled Social Research to Foster Effective Collaboration and Strengthen Pro-Poor Value Chains.
