Iain has over 20 years of experience teaching in early childhood, primary and middle school settings in state schools, Catholic schools and independent private schools.  He has extensive experience as a professional development and adult educator. Iain is a member of the Australian College of Educators' and is a registered teacher with the Queensland College of Teachers. He has also worked as a public servant in Education Queensland and N.S.W. Department of Education and Training.  Iain has been responsible for policy development and program management in Indigenous education; gender and equity; student welfare and support services; and education facilities research.

Iain has served on a number of editorial boards, as well as being an article and chapter reviewer. He is also an active member in many associations such as: the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia; The Australian Association for Research in Education; the American Educational Research Association; the American Sociological Association; the Association for the Study of Higher Education; the Canadian Education Association; The Canadian Society for the Study of Education.

Iain's Ph.D. titled: 'Clearing them for learning': Exploring the critical factors for success in school-based young mothers' education programs, has had a direct impact on social policy with his research being used to inform the development and construction of a $14.5M purpose built education centre for young mothers at Canberra College. Iain has been nominated for the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Social Justice in Education Award for his Ph.D. work. He was the recipient of the Australian Teacher Education Association (ATEA) Research Excellence Recognition Awards for Early Career Researchers for his research in developing an innovative teaching clinic model.

Iain has been awarded a number of fellowships over the years and he has been a visiting scholar to the University of British Columbia and is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies at York University in Toronto. He is also an associate member of the Centre for Leadership and Diversity (CLD) in the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto.Iain's teaching and research interests are interrelated, they sit within the domains of student experience and success, student welfare /wellbeing, leadership theory, policy and practice, education settings and environments. Iain employs a student-centred and research-based teaching approach. He is committed to equity and social justice in education.
