Wayne holds both primary and secondary teaching qualifications. He commenced his career teaching in a number of primary and secondary schools in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. After being Deputy Principal and Principal he moved into Teacher Education teaching Mathematics Education and has worked in universities in the Northern Territory, Western Australia and the ACT.
During Wayne's time in Teacher Education he has held a variety of administrative positions including Program Convener, Head of School and Head of Discipline. He is currently Program Director for Undergraduate Education courses within the Faculty of ESTeM. Wayne is responsible for Mathematics Education within these courses. In addition he has served on numerous university committees.
Wayne's PhD thesis examined primary school teachers' mathematical pedagogical content knowledge. The study found that as teachers' specialised knowledge in each of the areas teaching, students and mathematics varied, this impacted significantly on their pedagogical content knowledge. Factors such as self-efficacy, teacher beliefs and the culture of the school were also shown to influence each teacher's pedagogical content knowledge.
