The University of Canberra offers a unique opportunity for students fascinated with culture, heritage and museums to undertake undergraduate studies which focus on the conservation, management and understanding of cultural heritage in all its forms.
The Bachelor of Heritage, Museums and Conservation is the only undergraduate course of its type in Australia, offering students the opportunity to specialize in one of these subfields, but also benefit from the distinctive interdisciplinary approach of this degree, ensuring a well rounded graduate with a holistic understanding of all types of heritage in their cultural and historical contexts.
Our optional flexible study option means remote students can complete their first year online and through residential intensives. As well as our specialist degree program, students may also undertake majors in Conservation, Heritage Studies or Museum Studies, or simply enjoy one or two heritage subjects as electives!

Students are able to apply for admission into this degree by way of portfolios and brief interviews with our friendly team of academics.
Why Portfolio Entry?
Because your ATAR score is not always a true reflection of your creative potential. This pathway offers you the opportunity to show off your passion for Heritage, Museums and Conservation. School leavers will use this pathway to secure an offer in the Early Round of admissions. Mature Age Students will benefit from not worrying about their ATAR score (or equivalent) and focus on showcasing their personal talent and/or professional achievements in these fields.
What Should I Include in my Heritage Portfolio?
The purpose of the portfolio is to help us determine whether you are passionate and knowledgeable about heritage. When we look at your portfolio the main question we are asking is: "Does this person love heritage so much that we should offer them a place in our course?"
To help us answer this question, we want you to give us a portfolio with three major sections:
- A short outline - write us a short outline (no more than one page) that tells us a little bit about you, including why you're applying for portfolio entry, and why you think you'd be an excellent person to have in our course. Also tell us about any experience you have in heritage, including any relevant volunteering or work experience you have done.
- A review of three heritage sites - demonstrate that you have thought about heritage by reviewing three heritage sites or experiences that you think are really engaging or innovative or unusual. For each site, tell us what makes them good sites and why you chose them specifically. (They do not all have to be physical sites – we would love to hear about heritage focused websites, or digital heritage or intangible heritage as well.)
- Your vision for the future – tell us what sort of job you see yourself doing in heritage in the future. Do you fancy conserving objects, designing exhibitions, working with volunteers? Do you like the idea of keeping track of collection objects, or researching and acquiring new ones? You don't have to stick to this in the future (university is all about discovering new opportunities) but this will give us an idea of what appeals to you right now.
The portfolio should be put together in an electronic format, preferably in PDF format. You can also send your portfolio on media (a USB memory stick, or a CD) or you can forward a link to share it in Dropbox, Google drive, etc.

Canberra is a great place to learn about heritage, museums and conservation!
The Heritage, Museums and Conservation course offer opportunities for work integrated learning and internships in Australia’s fabulous national museums, galleries, cultural and collecting institutions. Our courses also take advantage of the rich cultural heritage of the Canberra region to provide learning opportunities and fieldwork experience for the development of practical skills.
The group work, field trips, exhibition visits, and broad range of student activities associated with this course, combine to create a strong community bond amongst students—forged in hard work and fun times. The heritage profession in Canberra also contributes generously to the student community through their guest teaching, mentoring and supervisory roles.
Students majoring in Conservation are eligible for the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material (AICCM) Student Conservator of the Year Award, which is sponsored by the Association of Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (ADFAS). The award acknowledges students who show an early commitment to, and involvement with, the conservation profession, recognising this as an indication of future leaders of the profession – along with high academic achievement.
Graduates of the Bachelor of Heritage, Museums and Conservation may find employment in a broad range of private and public sector roles.
Career opportunities include diverse roles in museums and galleries - from specialist conservators to curators and collection managers.
Alternatively, students may prefer to pursue opportunities as heritage site managers or rangers, administrative roles in state and commonwealth heritage agencies, in local government or in private practice as specialist heritage consultants and advisors.
The graduate skills and attributes acquired in this course are relevant to a broad range of careers in, for instance, cultural policy and management, tourism, environmental policy and community development.
