Biography

Felicity Packard is a lecturer in Creative Writing in the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Canberra. She is also a screenwriter and producer. She is one of the writers behind the acclaimed Underbelly true crime drama franchise – Underbelly; Underbelly - A Tale of two Cities; Underbelly – The Golden Mile; Underbelly – Razor; Underbelly – Badness; and Underbelly – Squizzy, the last three on which she was also Associate Producer. She was Lead Writer and Producer of the miniseries ANZAC Girls which screened in 2014 on the ABC.

She is currently involved in developing the Wolf Creek horror franchise for television.

In 2008 she won the Queensland Premier's Literary Award (screenwriting) for episode 7 of Underbelly "Wise Monkeys". She has also won five Australian Writers' Guild Awards (AWGIES) for Underbelly, Underbelly – A Tale of Two Cities, Underbelly – Badness and ANZAC Girls.

Felicity's great prose loves are Jane Austen, Ursula le Guin and Ronald Hugh Morrieson, and her screenwriting idols are William Goldman, Stephen Poliakoff, Joss Whedon and David Chase.

Areas of Teaching

  • Felicity teaches across a range of creative writing related subjects including screenwriting, prose writing and Literary Studies. She also supervises Honours and Higher Degrees by Research.

Research Interests

  • TV true crime, genre screenwriting, the modern novel, sci fi on screen, adaptation theory.

Felicity is currently undertaking her PhD, writing on Underbelly, and the influence the production culture of tv has on genre.

Awards

One of Felicity's episodes of Underbelly (series 1) "Wise Monkeys" won the 2008 Queensland Premier's Literary Award (television writing). Underbelly (series 1) also won the 2008 AFI award for Outstanding Drama series, and two Australian Writers' Guild Awards – Best Mini Series; and the overall Peer Recognition Prize. It was also short-listed for the NSW Premier's Literary Award. Underbelly – A Tale of Two Cities won the 2010 Australian Writers' Guild Award for Best Mini Series. Both The Golden Mile and Razor were shortlisted for AWGIE Awards in 2010 and 2012 respectively.
