Invitation

The University of Canberra in conjunction with University of Canberra College, the University of Canberra College English Language Centre and the Lu Rees Archives invites you to come to the Get Real Canberra 2013 Picture Book Competition Exhibition Opening & Prize Announcement. With over $2000 in prizes, this competition celebrates Canberra's special places, heroes and proud young population. The competition was open to the public for books written, illustrated or first published in 2013 where Canberra was a central theme.

After winners are announced, the exhibition will be moved to the ILTC Library, Level A, Building 5.

Children's Picture Book Competition

The University of Canberra in conjunction with University of Canberra College, the University of Canberra College English Language Centre and the Lu Rees Archives invites you to enter the Get Real Canberra 2013 Picture book competition. This competition will celebrate Canberra's special places, heroes and proud young population. The competition will be open to the public for books written, illustrated or first published in 2013 where Canberra is a central theme.

Guidelines

One entry form must be used for each entry submitted to the competition. All appropriate sections MUST be completed otherwise your entry will not be accepted. Please refer to the Conditions of Entry section when completing your entry form. Competition entries will be accepted from September 2013 and the entry form will be made available here in due course.

Prizes will be awarded for the following categories.

  • Best Writing
  • Best Illustration
  • Outstanding Children's Picture book
  • Best Bilingual Children's Picture Book
  • Best Early Readers Information Book

Award Criteria - Written Narrative

  1. The creative and critical merit of ideas
  2. Exceptional creative writing
  3. Communicating an innovative narrative with a Canberra focus.
  4. Style of language and presentation

Award Criteria - Illustrated Narrative

  1. Graphic excellence (incl. Typography and Design Principles and Elements)
  2. Integration of text, graphics and illustrations to engage interest and enhance understanding for the target Reader
  3. Quality of the finished book must be at a professional standard suitable for publication
  4. Appropriateness for the nominated readership.

Target Audience

Entrants will nominate the target Audience

  • 0-3 years these are board books and novelty books
  • 3-5 years these are picture books, ABC books
  • 5-7 years picture books, reading primers
  • 7-9 years black and white stories, novels and comics
  • 9-11 years short stories, poetry, novels and graphic novels
  • 11 years + young adult fiction
  • 0-18 years: Children's Information Book
